The disciples ask a provocative question of the Lord Jesus in John 1:38 when they say “Where are you staying?” In the ancient Jewish world, no public establishments of education (such as modern colleges) were available. Those interested in becoming ‘disciples’ would entreat a teacher to accept their ‘internship’. There was no facility, but only the ‘Rabbi’. “Where are you staying?” was equivalent to saying, ‘Can I be your disciple?’ Evangelist Jerry Dickinson addresses this account in today’s sermon.

For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:13-14, NKJV)
